Following on from day 20, lets look at anger and joy.
The spectrum for anger can vary from low grade long standing frustration, to fully blown short or long lived anger outbursts. Ultimately it effects Wood Energy, and it is this energy which is responsible for the free flow of Qi which impacts on our physical and emotional well being. It also resonates with the sinews, eyes, nails and Ethereal Soul.
These emotions make Qi rise which is why folk often present with headaches, tinnitus, red face or dizziness. Folk who have issues with this emotion often struggle with insomnia and be particularly prone to vivid dreams. Pain is another strong symptom associated with this emotion, this may be particularly noticeable in the neck and shoulders where tension is often held.
If anger is repressed it may lead to the stagnation of Qi and this is often felt like a lump in the throat, or a sensation of distension in the abdomen. Mood swings and irritability. PMT and period pain are often seen as problems caused by stagnation of Qi which may have been triggered by frustration or anger.
This brings us to the last emotion. Here is a question for you, do you think one can have too much Joy in one’s life?
Well it would appear from the ancient Chinese medical text’s that the answer is actually yes. They were not talking about your everyday type of joy but more like a manic joy, see we are back to balance (I know I know, that old chestnut).
It has been interpreted as excessive excitement and heightened mental and visual stimulation/assault. This is thought to impact on our Fire Energy and manifests as palpitations (which are more subjective) and insomnia, a sense of restlessness or just not being able to be relaxed, calm and quiet. Think children’s parties where they are all hyped up on fun and sugar, giggles abound and next thing you know it ends in tears and upset.
We live our lives as emotional beings so surely our health care providers should take that on board when treating us. If you have not already had some before you might be pleasantly surprised but now understand why your acupuncturist places a high emphasis on emotional health.
A consultation with your local acupuncturist might even set off a “EUREKA” moment where YOU suddenly connect a physical symptom to an emotional pattern and low and behold you are then able to work on this alongside the treatment you will receive.
